You may remember our news recap show Week in Geek from our YouTube channel, where we broke down the all the happenings in the nerd world throughout the week. This time around, we’re keeping things sleek, streamlined, and simple, delivering you the juiciest stories from the Monday to Friday week and dishing up our raw, unfiltered thoughts on what Hollywood and the geek sphere got up to.

Let’s dive into the biggest things that happened this past week, February 5 to February 9.

Monday, February 5

We got a brand-new batch of kick-ass Solo: A Star Wars Story teaser posters!

Julia: Is it weird that I’m less excited seeing the posters because the teaser/trailer didn’t really grip me? For a Han Solo film, it just doesn’t sit well with me that the actual Han Solo parts of the trailer didn’t excite me. From an artsy-fartsy perspective, they’re a collection of lovely, bold posters, though!

Zhiana: I’m really digging the aesthetic of these posters, and I’m already waiting for the inevitable influx of Qi’ra cosplays this year. My bet is that it’ll be the new cosplay craze — but who can blame them? She looks amazing!

Ryan: I have not been a fan of any of the marketing for this movie, but these posters are absolutely amazing. Of course, the Lando one is my favorite.

Brad: Regardless of what I think of the trailers, these posters are amazing. I’d totally love one and can easily envision one on my wall one day. I mean, any excuse to have Donald Glover in my home…

Tuesday, February 6

Lucasfilm dropped a major bomb when it announced that Game of Thrones series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss signed on to create a new trilogy of Star Wars films.

Julia: Not really sure how to take this news. If anything, at least they’ve got the budget and are able to take the epic visuals of Game of Thrones and translate that experience into the Star Wars universe. Either way, it’s Disney though, so it’s not like we’re going to be getting super mature themes show up in the films. Also, can we PLEASE see a Sith academy or a badass, lady Sith in the films sometime? Please? I feel like I’m not asking for a lot here.

Zhiana: Look, I’m just as excited to see more Star Wars as the next fan, but I don’t see why we had to go with the GoT creators for it. I don’t see how they’re going to mesh their gripping, sexy, violent, and heartbreaking storytelling experience from Game of Thrones and “Disney-fy” it for audiences. If Disney gives them full rein, then I might actually be excited. I’d like to really see the Dark Side of the Force and the true brutality of the Sith on-screen. On the other hand, though, I thoroughly enjoy the Star Wars franchise just how it is.

Ryan: I honestly welcome this news. I do think we can have too much Star Wars (I personally feel that the Solo movie is an example of that), but this duo has created the most epic television show of all time. I am hoping they can put a much darker take on the property, and maybe film it from a Sith perspective.

Brad: This marks the third additional trilogy now, I believe? Look, I love Star Wars more than most, but I’m beginning to worry it will become over saturated. But if we are getting more films, especially ones from the Game of Thrones creators, I hope we get some darker takes on possibly the origins of the Sith.

Wednesday, February 7

Netflix released the first trailer for Jessica Jones season two, and the titular hero is seen facing some of her darkest demons.

Julia: I’m always excited for more Marvel Netflix goodness! Jessica Jones was my second-favorite Marvel series, so I’m here for it.

Zhiana: I have been waiting for season two of Jessica Jones for what feels like an eternity. It’s easily my favorite Marvel TV show and I cannot wait to see more. The trailer really had my heart pumping.

Ryan: I loved Jessica Jones season one, and I think Krysten Ritter is one of the best actors in the Marvel on-screen universe. She completely owns the character, and the storylines are very dark and intriguing. Season one had THE best acting of maybe any superhero show or movie I’ve ever seen. The teaser for season two appears to be no different. If anything, it seems to be even darker and hints that it’s going to dig even deeper into her troubled past. I’d go so far as to boldly predict that Ritter may even win an Emmy for this season.

We got to meet Josh Brolin as Cable in the second trailer for Deadpool 2

Julia: Deadpool sass always makes me giggle. The mustache line absolutely killed me!

Zhiana: The gags in this trailer made me cackle like the Wicked Witch of the West. Calling out the mustache debacle? PRICELESS.

Ryan: I loved the first movie the first time I saw it. The second time, I really didn’t like it. Once I knew all the jokes, there was no movie there. This time around, it has the jokes, but also seems to be more story-driven. I’m really excited for this movie, and Cable looks absolutely badass. I have a gut feeling that this will end up being one of the best comic book movies of all time.

Brad: The X-Men as a property is by far my favorite group in the Marvel universe. I grew up on Deadpool and Cable stories, so of course I’m totally stoked with what we’ve seen so far. Bring on X-Force please!

Thursday, February 8

Sony let us sink our teeth into the first trailer for Tom Hardy’s Venom.

Julia: At least it looks like they’re doing the hospital scene right! I’m a little unsure of how to feel about there being a Venom film. Just based off of the trailer, it doesn’t quite seem like they’ve completely captured the Venom character yet, but then again, the studio might just be trying to get the film out there to appease audiences, so who really knows?

Zhiana: I’m not sure if this trailer really explains what (or who) Venom is to people who might not be familiar with the comics, so I don’t see how it will draw in mainstream audiences, as it just looks like another generic thriller flick with some creepy goo. That being said, I adore Tom Hardy and I can’t wait to see him on screen. He’s a powerhouse in anything he does and I’m sure he will bring his A-game to the franchise.

Ryan: I’m VERY excited for this movie, but I got literally nothing out of this teaser.

Brad: Tom Hardy is one of my man crushes, and watching him hulk out as a black alien monster and eating goons might be the best thing we get to see on screen in Venom… but we haven’t seen it yet.

Friday, February 9

Disney/Pixar keeps ramping up the anticipation for Incredibles 2, this time releasing an awesome new poster featuring Edna Mode.

Julia: To be honest, I expected more. It doesn’t really hype me up like seeing the Black Panther poster or the Thor: Ragnarok poster did. Then again, it doesn’t even have to be all that colorful, even a retro look would’ve made me excited. All that out of the way, still excited to see the sequel. It’s been so long!

Brad: This film is the greatest good I’m ever going to get!
