America’s sweetheart, Tom Hanks, has been cast to play the nicest man to ever grace the small screen: Mister Rogers. Talk about perfect casting.
Diary of a Teenage Girl director Marielle Heller will direct the biopic, entitled Are You My Friend, with a script written by Noah Harpster and Micah Fitzerman-Blue. The film will tell the true story of Fred Rogers, journalist Tom Junod, and their unlikely friendship. The two met when Junod reluctantly accepted an assignment to write a profile on the beloved television star. After meeting Rogers, the once-contemptuous writer changes his perspective on life.
Big Beach Films will be producing with Marc Turtletaub and Peter Saraf at the helm. “Now more than ever, we all need a re-introduction to Fred Rogers’ message of uncompromising love and kindness between all living things. Mari Heller is the perfect visionary filmmaker to bring Noah and Micah’s script to life and because of her vision and this remarkable script, we have the quintessential actor to play Fred Rogers,” said Turtletaub and Saraf about the project (via Variety). Tristar Pictures holds the rights to distribute the film internationally.
It is currently unknown when Are You My Friend will begin filming.
