Yet another classic comic book character is hitting the small screen–this time with a spooky twist.
The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Netflix has picked up an untitled drama based on the Archie Comics graphic novel The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The streaming service ordered a batch of 20 episodes that will air for two seasons.
This sizable order is exciting, albeit a little surprising given the sheer volume of episodes. The success of the CW’s Riverdale, which Netflix has the SVOD rights to, clearly played a part in the streaming giant’s decision to claim another piece of the Archie pie. The Riverdale offshoot originally underwent development for the CW in September. Sources state that the network, as well as the producers Warner Bros Television, already had a list of actresses they were eying up to play the titular role at that time, but there is no word yet on who will step into the part for Netflix.
The graphic novel series, which began in 2014, reimagines the adventures of the plucky teenage witch as a dark, occult-filled horror/coming-of-age tale. Throughout the series, Sabrina Spellman struggles with both her witch and mortal sides all while navigating high school and battling the evil forces that threaten her and her family. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who is the chief creative officer for Archie Comics, wrote both the original series as well as the script for this upcoming adaptation.
The new series will begin filming in February 2018, with Riverdale showrunner Aguirre-Sacasa set to direct and produce.
