The official trailer for Ready Player One, Steven Spielberg’s highly anticipated film adaptation of Ernest Cline’s bestselling book, has dropped. As with the Comic Con preview trailer released earlier this year, it’s jam packed with references to pop culture and ’80s nostalgia.
The trailer introduces viewers to the year 2045 and a dystopian, crowded future in which the only place people have left to escape to is the OASIS: a virtual reality world which allows them to do and be anything they want. The creator of the OASIS, James Halliday, has passed away, leaving behind a challenge for anyone who wishes to inherit his significant fortune and control of the OASIS itself: find an Easter Egg he’s hidden inside the OASIS.
Wade Watts, a.k.a. Parzival, a young man who grew up idolizing Halliday, joins the race to find the Egg, and soon discovers that he’s up against a huge corporation pouring money into the hunt in the hope of taking control of the OASIS for their own nefarious purposes. Wade must team up with other like-minded hunters to find the Egg and save the future.
You may need to watch the trailer a few times; blink and you’ll miss references of everything from Battletoads to Chucky to Street Fighter. And while the book was a love letter to an ’80s childhood, the movie appears to cater to a broader pop culture palate: you’ll see Overwatch’s Tracer, the Iron Giant, and much, much more. Let us know what you spotted in the comments below.
Ready Player One will hit theatres on March 30, 2018.
