Ernest Cline has confirmed that he is writing a sequel to his bestselling debut novel, 2011’s Ready Player One.

The Ready Player One movie adaptation is due for release on March 30 next year, with Steven Spielberg at the helm and Tye Sheriden, Olivia Cooke, and Ben Mendelsohn in starring roles. During a launch event for the film’s official trailer, which was streamed via Facebook Live on Sunday, Cline was asked if it was true that he was writing a sequel.

“It is true,” Cline said. “I can’t talk about it too much, but I can tell you that there’s no better inspiration for a writer to return to a world that they’ve already worked on when they’re seeing Steven Spielberg bringing that world to life. And to get to talk to him and get his input; one of the greatest storytellers of all time, and a storyteller that had a direct influence on my first novel, Ready Player One. To bounce ideas off of him for the sequel, it’s just the most gratifying thing that’s ever happened to me in my life.”

Set in a dystopian future in which humanity spends more time in a virtual world than the real one, Ready Player One tells the story of teenager Wade Watts as he hunts for an Easter Egg hidden somewhere in the virtual world called the OASIS by its late creator. Whoever finds the Egg will not only inherit a vast sum of money, but control of the OASIS itself.

The rights to a film adaptation were sold before the book was even published, and it went on to win multiple awards and become a New York Times bestseller. Full of references to pop culture, particularly ’80s movies and video games, Ready Player One quickly became a favorite book within the geek community. (You can check out our own discussion of the book with Cline himself on YouTube.)

Cline released his second novel, Armada, in 2015. Unrelated to Ready Player One, Armada was also a treasure trove of references to video games and movies, and a film adaptation is planned.

While Cline hasn’t yet given us any details about the Ready Player One sequel (will a Player Two be involved?), the world of the OASIS provides almost limitless possibilities. You can be sure what we’ll be the first to let you know when we find out more.

  1. Aside from money, I just don’t see why.

I loved Ready Player One, but I have zero interest in a sequel. It was a complete story with a beginning, middle and end with everything wrapping up nicely. And it had a nice message which culminated it the final sentence that, at least for me, sort of gets a bit cheapened by a sequel.
