Ubisoft showed OUT at this year’s E3, laying more than a few heavy-hitting cards on the table. While Ubi isn’t exactly known for jaw-dropping presentations or announcements that have fans jumping out of their seats due to pure, unadulterated joy, this year was a different story. The company came out of left field and actually unveiled Beyond Good and Evil 2. Craziness, right?
Ubisoft’s presser wasn’t a particularly long one, so let me breeze through all the trailer reveals and news breaks for you.
South Park: The Fractured But Whole, coming October 17
Ubisoft showed off a new trailer for South Park: The Fractured But Whole, and it’s as raunchy as expected. The game is slated for release on October 17 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
“In the quiet mountain town of South Park, darkness has spread across the land. A new power is rising to combat this evil. An entire squad of superheroes will rise, led by a nocturnal scavenger sworn to clean the trash can of South Park society.
The kids are playing superheroes, and Cartman is determined to turn Coon and Friends into the biggest superhero franchise of all time. However, the villainous Professor Chaos emerges with an evil plan to eliminate Coon and Friends. The heroes need to work as a team to fight the chaos and terror that that grips the town.
From the creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, comes South Park: The Fractured But Whole, a sequel to South Park: The Stick of Truth, winner of 25 video game awards.
Players will once again assume the role of the New Kid. As the newest member of Coon and Friends, you must create your own superhero, build up your notoriety, and use your superpowers to save South Park. Only then will Coon and Friends take their rightful place as the greatest team of superheroes ever assembled, and get the movie deal they so richly deserve. In a city gripped by chaos, Coon and Friends rise to save the day.”
South Park: Phone Destroyer
Yep, another South Park-related trailer. This time for a mobile game! South Park: The Phone Destroyer will be released sometime this year.
“From South Park Digital Studios comes a real-time battle game like nothing you’ve ever experienced before! Take on Cartman, Kenny, Stan and Kyle in all out mobile mayhem! South Park: Phone Destroyer brings you iconic South Park characters, action packed real-time strategy, exploding PvP battles, trademark South Park humor and collectible cards in a perfect mix that’s spicier than Cartman’s chili con carne. Just Dance 2018, coming October 24
Ah, yes, the ubiquitous live performance promoting the newest Just Dance game. Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, coming August 29
Yay, another Switch game! The living legend Shigeru Miyamoto, designer at Nintendo, graced the E3 2017 stage to speak about the Ubisoft-developed Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. Though the Internet has been leaking info on the title like a drippy faucet, it was still nice to see M+R: KB in all its brightly colored glory.
The Rabbids may not be for everyone (I personally think they’re the eviler cousins of the god-awful Minions from Despicable Me that I somehow can NEVER escape), but the open world exploration, turn-based tactical fights, and the fun aesthetic seem to be enough to hook a solid audience. Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle will be available on August 29 for the Nintendo Switch.
“Get a first look at all the chaos of Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle and join Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Yoshi as they team up with Rabbids heroes to explore a new world twisted by the mischievous Rabbids, filled with secrets and nods to classic Mario games! Discover a feel-good and modern combat adventure designed exclusively for the Nintendo Switch, playable anywhere, anytime, with anyone.”

The snowy sports game Steep is getting an add-on later this year! You can get your hands on Steep: Road to the Olympics Expansion on December 5.

The Crew 2, coming early 2018
Ubisoft unveiled some pre-alpha gameplay footage of The Crew 2 — which sadly doesn’t actually feature Terry Crews as a playable character, contrary to what was shown for Crackdown 3 at Microsoft’s press conference on Sunday. (How awesome would The Crew 2 featuring Crews be, though? INSANE.) The clip came packed with cars, planes, and fast-paced cityscapes in none other than the Big Apple. The Crew 2 is due out early next year.
“The newest iteration in the revolutionary franchise, The Crew 2 captures the thrill of the American motorsports spirit in one of the most exhilarating open worlds ever created. Welcome to Motornation, a huge, varied, action-packed, and beautiful playground built for motorsports throughout the entire US of A. Enjoy unrestrained exploration on ground, sea, and sky. From coast to coast, street and pro racers, off-road explorers, and freestylers gather and compete in all kinds of disciplines. Join them in high-octane contests and share every glorious moment with the world.”
Transference, coming spring 2018
Elijah Wood (yeah, the same Elijah Wood from Lord of the Rings) spoke with Chris Watters about the upcoming VR title Transference, which his company SpectreVision is hard at work on. We don’t know much about Transference, but it sure looks intriguing. The game will be available in VR (PSVR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive), and on traditional systems — PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
“Transference is a psychological thriller and the first game collaboration between SpectreVision and Ubisoft. Bridging the gap between movies and games, we invite you to lose yourself in the destructive tale of a man’s obsession as you explore his digitally recreated memories. Experience the limits of techno-psychology and escape a maze-like puzzle concealing a corrupted truth. Get projected into the digital consciousness of troubled case subjects and maybe you will influence their fate.”
Skull and Bones, coming fall 2018
The buzz around Skull and Bones has been constant for quite some time, and now it’s finally out for everyone to see. Ubisoft revealed some PvP footage during its showing, but fans should expect far more than just PvP sea combat. Skull and Bones will be available in fall 2018 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
“It is the Golden Age of Piracy. Renegade captains command the most powerful weapons on Earth: warships. You are a pirate captain who has refused the king’s pardon and sailed from the Caribbean to the Indian Ocean, an untamed frontier full of lavish riches. However, these waters are also a battleground where far-reaching colonial empires, powerful trading corporations, and ruthless pirate gangs clash. In order to survive, you will have to build a lethal fleet, prey upon lucrative trade routes, and ally with other pirates in your endless struggle for supremacy.
Dominate a dangerous open ocean: A shared open world that reacts as you plunder rich trade routes. Customize your pirate experience: Choose your captain, recruit your crew and build deadly ships. Naval combat redefined: Use your weapons, spyglass and even the wind to stalk and destroy your prey. Play solo or co-op: Raid the Hunting Grounds alone or group with other players to hunt larger prey. Explosive multiplayer: Enter the Disputed Waters and fight for supremacy in a variety of game modes.”
Starlink: Battle for Atlas, coming fall 2018
Not a ton is known about this next title, but the trailer looks pretty neat. Players attach toys to their game controllers to trek through Starlink: Battle for Atlas, which could be a great selling point for some gamers. It’ll be available in the fall of next year.
“In Starlink: Battle for Atlas, you’re part of a group of heroic interstellar pilots, dedicated to free the Atlas star system from the Forgotten Legends, an evil robot force. Starlink: Battle for Atlas offers a whole new gameplay experience: build your own modular Starship model, mount it on your controller, and take part in epic space combats. Equip your model with different parts and your Starship changes in game in real time. Assemble your fleet, mix and match your pilots, Starships and weapons to create your own play style and defeat the enemy.
Mix and match pilots, hulls, wings, and weapons to assemble your ideal starship with an unprecedented level of customization and creativity. Changes to your physical ship instantly appear in-game allowing you to immediately jump into the battle.
Travel seamlessly through the exotic alien worlds of the Atlas Star System. Each one of its planets has its own identity, ecosystem and wildlife. Be careful, as space is a hostile environment and will present many challenges. The world evolves depending on your actions and your choices. Everything you do has an impact on your journey, and enemies will react and fight back intelligently and take over the star system if you don’t stop them.
Build your unique play style. Experiment with different pilot abilities, weapon types, and status effects to discover and unleash devastating combos upon your enemies and overcome deadly challenges.”
Far Cry 5, coming February 27, 2018
YES. YES. YES. I genuinely can’t wait to get my hands on this. Ubisoft gave Far Cry 5 hopefuls another juicy, terrifying look at the upcoming title, and it’s just as spine-chilling as you’d expect. Set in a not-so-dystopian America, Far Cry 5 centers around a religious sect gone haywire, transformed into an all-out cult bent on slaying the non-believers and recruiting others to join their cause. The next installment in the Far Cry franchise will be out on February 27, 2018.
“Far Cry comes to America in the latest installment of the award-winning franchise.
Welcome to Hope County, Montana. When your arrival incites the cult to violently seize control of the region, you must rise up and spark the fires of resistance to liberate a besieged community.
Freely explore Hope County’s rivers, lands, and skies with the largest customizable weapon and vehicle roster ever in a Far Cry game. You are the hero of the story in a thrilling world that hits back with every punch, and where the places you discover and the locals you ally with will shape your story in ways you’ll never see coming.
Stranded in hostile territory, find strength in the community around you to lead a resistance against a cult taking over Hope County, Montana. The freedom to go in any direction – you decide the when, the where, and the how. From the moment you enter Hope County you have the freedom to tackle the world in any order you choose. Play your way against Joseph Seed and his fanatical followers in a dynamic open world that adapts and reacts to the choices you make. Tear up the countryside in iconic American vehicles you can make your own; from muscle cars to big rigs, from ATVs to tractors.”
Beyond Good and Evil 2
I can practically hear your squeals of joy from here. Ubisoft closed out its show with Beyond Good and Evil 2, bringing Michel Ancel to the stage. The upcoming game is a prequel and is set “before the birth of Jade.” No release date was announced, but let’s hope we don’t have to do too much waiting! (It’s been almost 15 years already…)
“Journey to System 3, for the prequel to one of Ubisoft’s most beloved games! Fight alongside unforgettable characters in a stunning new solar system, as you struggle for freedom and the right to determine your own fate among the stars. Play the adventure by yourself or with friends in a vast and seamless online playground.
Beyond Good and Evil 2 is the spiritual successor to the cult classic, a prequel that will transport players into a profoundly multicultural world, capturing the spirit of the original with grandiose decors and intense dramas that play out across a vast universe. Through the Space Monkey Program, Ubisoft Montpellier will be developing the game alongside its community of fans.
System 3 has become the center of interstellar trade and colonization in the Milky Way of the 24th century, thanks to the creation of Hybrid slaves. While private enterprises fight over resources and power, the first colonists weave together the rich and diverse spiritual and cultural heritages of Old Earth to give meaning to their existence. In this new era of piracy, we will rise from lowly pirate to legendary captain at the helm of massive star-faring vessels, adventuring alongside crews of colorful characters to fight for freedom and the right to determine our own fate among the stars!”
